New Kiln 2006
Mar 25 06

The last of the old
Rock Hard kiln has
been torn down and
cleared away.  Paul
will use the old base,
he has cut out the old
melted salt, and there
is a trench down the
middle to the chimney
.
May 2,
The bricks have been
cleaned and sorted, all of
the old  steel has been cut
up and removed.
This is a shot of the
bourrie box. It is a fire box
outside of the kiln that
Paul will use to build up a
coal bed before he starts
stoking  the fire box inside
the kiln.  There are holes
at the bottom that will vent
into the kiln.
This form  will support
the arch until the last
bricks are put into the
top. After the keystones
are added the arch will
support itself.
This is called a
cantenary arch. The kiln
is 6' by 6' at the base
and 6' tall at the peak of
the arch.  The hole for
the chimney vent is on
the bottom. There are
shims on the bottom for
removing the form.
Here are the final
bricks being set into
place.  The fit was
perfect! There was
just enough room for
the mortar. The form
is pulled out, and it's
ready for the back to
be put in
Below you see the finished kiln! In the left background you can see the soft
brick door that became the back. We plan on firing soon. The students, and
Bill Gossman will be putting their pots in, I have some large sculptures that
have waited  nearly a year.  This is great.  I really missed our first  woody
when we switched to propane many years ago,  now we have come full
circle,  and our summer will be sure to be a productive one!
June 2006
The first bisque load
reached cone 012.
There was moisture
in the structure that
had to be dried out.
This is the second
stack waiting to be
unloaded and
glazed. It looks like
the draft is working,
and Paul has been
collecting wood for
the Glaze firing
coming up.
